Designed together with our Dutch partners TenneT, LionLink (formerly known as EuroLink ) is an electricity link that can supply around 1.8 gigawatts of clean electricity, enough to power approximately 1.8 million British homes. By connecting Dutch offshore wind to Dutch and British markets via subsea electricity cables called interconnectors, LionLink will strengthen our national energy security and support the UK’s climate and energy goals.

Like a conventionalpoint-to-point interconnector, LionLink will enable the cross border transmission of clean electricity via subsea cables. However, LionLink’s technology will also connect to Dutch offshore wind farms in the North Sea. This means that instead of individual wind farms connecting one by one to the shore, LionLink’s technology will enable offshore wind farms in Dutch territorial waters to connect offshore and plug into the energy systems of neighbouring countries. LionLink will be the first step in the journey to a more interconnected North Sea.

The Interim Non-Statutory Consultation Feedback Summary Report

In August 2023, we published an interim report providing an overview of all the feedback we received and how this feedback is being used to refine our project. The feedback has resulted in some refinements to our proposals which we’ve detailed below.

Following the non-statutory consultation, we have refined our proposals as follows:

  • An alternative landfall site at Walberswick has been identified, which could reduce access constraints and traffic impacts.
  • An alternative onshore cable corridor to the north of Southwold has been identified, which may reduce impacts on designated sites of ecological importance.
  • We are continuing to explore the potential for co-location of infrastructure in respect of landfalls, HVDC routes, converter station sites and HVAC routes, which aligns with feedback received calling for a more coordinated approach with other developers.

You can request a hard copy of the report if you would prefer, and any of our previous consultation materials via the contact details below. We value your views and will continue to work with local communities and stakeholders to develop the proposals further.

We’re holding a supplementary non-statutory consultation on the alternative landfall site at Walberswick and cable corridor to the north of Southwold (see Map 8). This will give you the opportunity to feedback on our proposals and help us to further refine them before a statutory consultation in 2025.

How you can get involved

We are holding three in-person exhibition events and two webinars. We're also offering digital versions of all materials and a feedback form on our ‘consultation materials’ page, which you can view here.

Check the next tab for details on the in-person and virtual consultation events.

What's next?

We will analyse the feedback we receive in this supplementary non-statutory consultation and our full consultation report, detailing all feedback, will be submitted with our Development Consent Order (DCO) application in 2025. We then anticipate a DCO decision in 2026. If approval is granted, we expect LionLink to be operational for 2030.

You can find out more information on what the DCO process is, and why it’s important, here.

Further information about the supplementary non‑statutory consultation will be published on this website soon.
