After leaving school, Natasha Bacciarelli, 26, worked in a range of jobs, before gaining an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nottingham in 2017. She then joined National Grid as a Graduate Innovations Analyst in 2018. Here she tells us about her career as an engineer working in National Grid Ventures.

Working at Grain LNG, the largest LNG (liquefied natural gas) importation terminal in Europe, I get to see first-hand how my work can have a positive impact on people’s lives.

At present, a typical day involves looking into ways our pipes could transport hydrogen to deliver cleaner energy and supporting on other innovation projects, such as a pilot carbon capture plant. All are technologies that could have a big impact on helping the UK achieve net zero.

I’m currently working on projects that focus on decarbonising the gas transmission network. It’s extremely important to use engineering skills as reaching net zero is a major and complex challenge.
